Several years ago I had a very similar epiphany about raking. I don't like raking, and it just takes too long to rake as well as I want to, so I decided to take no more than three swipes of the rake over a given patch of ground. The result is almost as good as I really want, but it's a lot faster, and so, for me, it's a substantial net gain.
